International Day of Women and Girls in Science: Words of Wisdom from Boyds

International Day of Women and Girls in Science is a global movement to recognise the vital role women play across science and to encourage the next generation of girls to see science as a place where they belong.

The theme of International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2026 is “Synergizing AI, Social Science, STEM and Finance: Building Inclusive Futures for Women and Girls.” Further information about the day can be found via the United Nations website.

At Boyds, we work alongside scientists, regulators, medics, and technical experts every day who are helping to turn research into medicines that make a real difference to patients’ lives. Today is an opportunity to celebrate the women across our teams and to share their advice for those considering a future in science.

Words of wisdom

Members of the Boyds team share their reflections and encouragement for women and girls interested in pursuing careers in science and STEM-related fields:

“Be curious, ask questions, network, and collaborate with peers and technical experts. Don’t let stereotypes influence you – focus on your work and believe in the value you bring.”
– Monica Pianella, Associate Director, Regulatory Affairs

“When studying, careers in STEM often seem to follow a set path. But by looking beyond it, connecting with others, and following your passion, entirely new opportunities can emerge.”
– Sabine Ruehle, Senior Director, Regulatory Affairs

“You can have it all, but not all at once. Focus on what matters most in each phase of life, and invest in your personal support network as much as your professional one.”
– Ami Patel, Senior Director, Business Development

“We are stronger together. The more women we have in science, the clearer it becomes to the next generation that women belong here.”
– Harriet Edwards, Director, Regulatory Affairs

Women have consistently advanced science through their expertise, dedication, and diverse perspectives. Cultivate curiosity, seek guidance when needed, collaborate effectively, and trust in your capabilities as you grow. Each step you take strengthens not only your own journey but also helps shape a more inclusive, innovative, and impactful future for science.”

– Shalini Gupta, Senior Manager, Regulatory Affairs

Looking ahead

When asked what excites them most about the future of women in science, the team highlighted the power of diversity, representation, and changing the conversation.

“It’s having diverse perspectives and representation that excites me most.”
– Kelsey Lenoch

“Normalising women’s presence in science breaks down barriers and empowers more women to enter and thrive in STEM.”
– Harriet Edwards

“I have never felt that being a woman in science has limited my opportunities, and I have been fortunate to learn from many inspiring female role models and mentors throughout my career.

Previous generations of women have faced significant challenges, including managing menopause and balancing caring responsibilities for children and elderly relatives. While flexible working and greater awareness of women’s issues have helped, women’s health remains underserved, and greater female representation in research is still needed to ensure these needs are fully understood and prioritised.”
– Sarah Stevenson, Senior Director, Regulatory and Medical Writing

At Boyds, we’re proud to support and work alongside women who are shaping the future of science, and to champion a culture where curiosity, collaboration, and inclusion drive better outcomes for patients.
