The European Commission has announced plans to set up a dedicated expert panel in the field of orphan and paediatric medical devices.
The panel aims to provide scientific and clinical advice in relation to medical devices intended for small size patient populations, such as for patients with a rare disease or for children. In addition, the Commission plans to update administrative aspects related to the management of expert panels.
These expert panels provide scientific, technical and clinical opinions and advice to support the implementation of the EU medical devices regulations.
The news has been welcomed by the clinical community, which has long called for greater support in the orphan and paediatric devices markets.
With the feedback period now closed, the Commission plans to adopt the initiative in the second quarter of 2025.
