Director/Senior Director, US Product Development

We are seeking a Director or Senior Director of Product Development to support our growth in the US. This person will be responsible for providing project leadership and program management for our clients’ development programs. Critically , they will also participate and have an active role in soliciting and securing new business to enhance Boyds’ US presence/revenue.

As a member of the Boyds Product Development team, this person will advise clients on development strategy as well as executing and delivering programs. Responsibilities include filling gaps where the client lacks the personnel and/or skill sets to move their programs forward (e.g. in start-ups/academic spinouts with seed funding), or to provide additional capacity (e.g. in well-funded but rapidly growing companies, where the pace of programs is outstripping the internal hiring capacity).

Additionally, the post-holder will also have an opportunity to help and manage the US based Product Development team.

As Boyds continues to focus its efforts on US expansion, the role offers an excellent opportunity for growth and development in the role via the potential to work on novel and innovative/cutting-edge client programs.

The position reports directly into Dr Nick Meyers, Vice President, Product Development. Dr Meyers is based in Cambridge, UK.

Key criteria:

  • 10+ years project leadership/program management experience with industry (biotech/pharma/CRO/consultancy) and a proven track record in drug development
  • Experienced in and comfortable in a consulting/client-facing role, involving liaising and working with clients, vendors, and academics, at all levels (experience of pitching/bid defences would be advantageous)
  • Proven experience in development project planning including scheduling (MS Project/Smartsheet proficiency is essential), placement, management and oversight of outsourced development work on behalf of clients
  • Experience in developing various product types (small molecule NCEs, biologics, ATMPs/cell and gene therapy products, vaccines, nanomedicines, drug-device combinations) in different therapeutic areas, desirable. Experience with cell and gene therapies is also desirable
  • A highly developed network across the industry is desirable
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organization skills with the ability to work independently and in a team environment



  • B.S., advanced degree in a life science discipline (additionally, an MD or MBA advantageous, but not essential)


Key responsibilities/priorities:

  • Client-facing, working directly with clients to consult/advise on development strategy and program management, ensure execution and delivery of programs in a timely fashion
  • Professional delivery of client work, ensuring work is completed per contract and protocols/study plans; ensure work is appropriately reported and reviewed
  • Effectively manage, direct and lead development projects to deliver programs to the required timelines and within budget
  • Actively involved in business development and soliciting new business from current and existing clients
  • Working directly with the Boyds Product Development team and Boyd leadership team to assist in building out US business
  • Provide a high standard of customer service and ensure complete understanding of Boyds offerings and responsibilities


Key evaluation criteria:

  • Demonstrate track record of client-facing consulting, program management and project leadership, including work with regulatory agencies, patents, commercial portfolio management, licensing/due diligence
  • Proven experience of working within multidisciplinary, highly dispersed project teams; managing, directing, and leading development projects to deliver programs to the required timelines and within budget
  • Ability to rapidly become expert in new clinical indications/therapeutic areas and with competitor products
  • Confident presenter accustomed to regular interaction with C-suite executives, Boards and investors
  • Experience or willingness to pitch new business highly advantageous
  • Demonstrable ability to work remotely and autonomously
  • A team player with strong interpersonal skills, and a proven ability to lead and/or influence strategy/senior management decision making
